Abstract: The bankruptcy process for individuals in Latvia is considered as one of the most liberal in the European Union. However, less than ten thousand individuals have applied for debt-relief since the introduction of Insolvency law ten years ago. Who are those individuals who look at the formal insolvency process as a way to re-establish their economic well-being? Who succeed and who, on the contrary, do not make it for the debt-relief? More generally, how legal and economic barriers, as well as different social mechanisms influence the decision to overcome overindebtedness rather than to give-up? The study is based on data gathered from the Latvian Insolvency Register, as well as from the field experiments with a debt-collector enterprise in Latvia to deliver insights on defaulted individuals in Latvia.
